1798 The government of the French Republic decided to invade the Swiss Confederation. On March 26, 1798, the French army occupied Zurich without resistance. The guild constitution of 1336 was abolished. Napoleon created the Helvetic Republic which lasted until 1803.

 
1799 The Austrians defeated the French army in the first Battle of Zurich (June 2 - 6, 1799) and liberated Zurich under the command of Archduke Charles of Austria. In the second battle of Zurich (September 25, 1799) the French general Massena defeated the Austrians and reoccupied Zurich.

 
1803 Napoleon gave Switzerland a new constitution (Mediation constitution). The cantons of the confederation regained their independence within the Confederation.

 
1811 The medieval fortifications of Zurich were demolished.

 
1815 A new confederation was founded by the 22 cantons of Switzerland. The Swiss confederation declared its permanent neutrality.

 
1833 Founding of the University of Zurich.

1848 Founding of the ‘Swiss Confederation’ with Berne as the capital of Switzerland.

 
1855 Foundation of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

1871 Opening of the main railway station.

 
1882 The first private horse tramway in Zurich. The ‘Quaibrucke’ and the ‘Burkliplatz’ were built.

 
1893 Eleven villages around Zurich were united with Zurich. The population increased from 28,000 to 121,000 inhabitants.
